Orcas And Pinnipeds
Sunset Bay sits in a protected cove that has a small opening to the sea. It features calm water and sandy beaches. Cape Arago Lighthouse sits just outside the bay.
We hiked a 6 mile out and back section of the Oregon Coast Trail (in the rain unfortunately). It leads through Shore Acres State Park that features an observation building as well as a very well kept botanical garden.
Further down the trail is the Simpson Reef Wildlife Viewpoint that looks out over an area dotted with rocky outcroppings that are resting places for very noisy Elephant Seals, Sea Lions and Harbor Seals.
Magalli spots 2 Orcas swimming north between the shore and where the seals are resting. We learn later that migrating Grey Whales are a very common sight during the spring migration but Orca sightings are rare.
