Sea Gull Central
Jalama Beach is a secluded county park on the Santa Barbara coast only reachable by a 15 mile entrance road. There are some campsites on the beach, some behind beach level sand dunes and some up on a bluff. It appeals to kite boarders when windy, surfers when it glasses off and to us during the week. On the weekends it appeals to the rest of the world. 100’s of campers with wall to wall tents, cars and RV’s cram into the lower campsites. We were fortunate to score a site up on the bluff for Friday and Saturday nights.
The sea gulls are organized. Seen here perched atop our RV is Myron, a Sentinel Sea Gull. His assignment was to announce to his comrades when an unsuspecting camper would leave food, a dog food bowl or a trash bag unattended. He would then sound the free-for-all signal that initiated a sea gull melee. Items that were edible and even some that were not would disappear in moments.
Despite the weekend crowds the beach was clean and uncrowded. We spent most of the time beach combing and people watching.
While camped up on the bluff we hung out Saturday night with the family camped next to us the “Hive of Five”. Maybe when we pass through next time we could hang out with them again.
That’s all for now,
Mike
